My upright ceramic electric heater from walmart exploded last winter. I know it sounds unbelievable but it really happened. We wanted to save on the heating bill so we went to walmart and bought 4 Holmes electric heaters model:HQH307 from walmart. It is an upright electric heater with 2 ceramic tubes, a thermostat control on the top left, a mode control on the top right with three settings that are off, level 1 and level 2 and a red reset button on the back of the heater.
My story is really pretty simple. My wife plugged the electric heater in the wall and as soon as she turned it on it popped loudly and shot pieces of one of the ceramic tubes across the room. One of the two tubes remained in tact while the other exploded. We were both in the room when it happened and were lucky to not be injured. I just saw a bright flash and the after effect but she was closer since she was turning it on and saw everything better.
Out of the four heaters we bought it was the only one we had a problem with and walmart exchanged it out for a new one free of charge. I guess the moral of the story is although the new ceramic electric heaters are some of the safest heaters available, you should still keep an eye on them if possible. I'd beware of leaving a heater like this in a childs room overnight unattended.
